Dr Yun Suen Pai directs the Inclusive Reality Lab at the University of Auckland, designing assistive technology with the people it serves. Portable Silent Room, a VR space for anxiety regulation co-designed with neurodivergent women and non-binary people, left some of them more anxious at first. Dementia Eyes let hospital staff see their workplace through the eyes of a person with dementia, and every one of them walked straight into the bin. Co-designing touch for care robots showed gentle means restraint, not softness. As AI learns to adapt, let the edge set the brief and keep the dial in people’s hands.
