What if a prosthetic wasn’t designed to replace anything? When Dani Clode built the Synchronised arm for disability activist Kelly Knox, she put the pulse sensor where she could find her own pulse, and at the first fitting nothing moved. From that series of alternative limbs to the Third Thumb, a robotic additional digit at the centre of University of Cambridge neuroscience research into augmentation, Dani’s work questions the human body as a fixed design template, and explores what happens when the bodies we design for begin to change the brief.
